Thoth is coming to iPhone

2026-06-05

Thoth has been a Mac app: start a recording, get a clean transcript with speakers, and a summary, all on your own machine with nothing uploaded. Now it is coming to iPhone and iPad, the same privacy-first architecture, built for recording wherever you actually are. The TestFlight beta is open today.

A few weeks ago I wrote about whether a privacy-first scribe even belonged on the phone, and what it would take to get there without giving up the on-device guarantee. That exploration is now an app.

The whole thing, in your pocket

The iPhone app is not a companion remote for the Mac. It is the full scribe:

  • Record meetings, lectures, interviews, or a quick voice note to yourself.
  • On-device transcription with WhisperKit, Parakeet, and Apple's Speech Analyzer. The audio never leaves your phone.
  • Speaker diarization that labels who spoke when, and lets you rename people right in the transcript.
  • AI summaries and chat, on-device with Apple Intelligence or with your own cloud key.
  • Tags and search so you can find any recording in seconds.

Even the on-device AI models run locally on the phone, no account and no internet required once they are downloaded.

For the full on-device power of Thoth, a recent iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence is recommended. That is what unlocks on-device AI summaries and the local models, so everything from transcription to the summary can run on the phone with nothing uploaded. For transcription itself, WhisperKit is still the most accurate engine, especially across languages, while Apple's Speech Analyzer is a lighter, faster alternative for the languages it covers.

Having all of this in your pocket matters more than I expected. A user once told me Thoth helps her process information because she is autistic and has ADHD, and being able to capture a conversation and revisit it on the device you always carry is exactly where that helps.

The same redact-before-cloud anonymization

If a particular summary is worth sending to a frontier cloud model, the anonymization built into Thoth comes along for the ride on iPhone too. Names, places, organizations, phone numbers, and emails are found on your device and swapped for neutral tokens before anything is sent, then restored in the result. You review exactly what leaves before it does. Here is how it works.

One purchase, both platforms

Thoth uses Universal Purchase. A Universal subscription unlocks Thoth Pro on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, so if you already pay for Pro on the Mac, the iPhone app unlocks automatically with nothing more to buy. There is also a Mobile plan if you only want it on your phone and iPad.

Try the beta

The iPhone app is in open beta on TestFlight while it goes through App Store review. If you want to record on the go with the same privacy guarantees as the Mac app, join the TestFlight beta and tell me what to fix.

Thoth is a private AI scribe that transcribes, diarizes, and summarizes on your device. Audio never leaves your machine, on Mac or iPhone. Built by one person, no funding, no team. The Mac app is on the App Store, and the iPhone app is on its way.
