Thoth for iPhone and iPad is out

Thoth for iPhone and iPad went live on the App Store on 25 July. Here it is.

I said in the announcement post that this would not be a companion app, the kind that lists your recordings and makes you go back to the Mac to do anything with them. It is the same engine. Transcription, speaker identification, summaries, and redaction all run on the phone, and none of it needs a network.

The proof is still turning the internet off

The simplest way to test a privacy claim is to remove the option to cheat. Airplane mode on, Wi-Fi off, then record, transcribe, and summarize.

Nothing to upload, nothing to leak, and no account anywhere in the flow.

What is the same, and what is not

The one real gap is the second row, and it is not an oversight I plan to close. On macOS, Thoth captures the meeting audio on one channel and your microphone on another, which is what makes speaker separation deterministic rather than a guess. iOS does not let an application read the audio of another application. That is a platform rule, not a missing feature, so on iPhone and iPad Thoth records the microphone and nothing else.

One hardware note: the Parakeet engine needs a device with at least 6 GB of memory. On anything smaller, Thoth uses Whisper or Apple Speech instead, which is a change of engine and not a change of privacy model.

iPad got a real layout

Not a stretched phone screen. The library sits beside the transcript, and the AI panel floats over both.

Getting a recording from one device to the other

Two ways, and neither involves me.

Turn on iCloud sync and the whole library, recordings, transcripts, summaries, and notes, follows you across your Macs and your iPhone through your own iCloud account. I never see any of it, because there is no Thoth server for it to pass through.

For a one-off, there is Send to Device: pick a recording on the Mac, pick the phone, and it goes over AirDrop or your local Wi-Fi. No cloud round trip at all, not even yours.

You do not buy it twice

Thoth Pro is a Universal Purchase. If you already subscribe on the Mac, install the iPhone app with the same Apple Account and Pro is already on. Nothing to restore, nothing to ask me for.

What I am working on next

Making the whole AI surface run on the local model: transcript improvement, translation, and chat, not just summaries. On-device summaries already work. The rest needs local models to stay coherent over a long transcript, which is the hard part, and it is why it is the only thing on the roadmap marked as in development.
